Stupid News…

Two men in Cleveland, Ohio… had a grudge that went back a long way… They began arguing recently as they had often done before… in the narrow hallway of an apartment house… This time though.. the two men went back to their apartments and returned carrying guns… and began to blaze away… Both shot their full load, reloaded and emptied their guns again… 24 bullets were fired in all as alarmed residents call the police… One detective said there were bullet holes everywhere… but neither man was hurt… even though they were standing only a few feet apart during the duel… maybe that’s because one was 77… and the other 76… one needed a cane to prop himself up while he fired… and the other had trouble seeing because of severe glaucoma… Both men insisted the feud is not over…..

A thief in Singapore who stole a bag containing a laptop, a cell phone and a wallet filled with credit cards… called the victim… offering to return the bag… if the victim left $25,000 in the lobby… of the apartment building where the thief lived… and included his address…

Terry Karas, was stopped by police in Pa. , while carrying a 21 inch TV down the street… Karas was three blocks from the department store that had just reported a theft of a TV… Terry told police that he had not stolen the T.V. set… he was merely trying to see if he would be able to carry it home… if he did decide to buy it….

Did you Know…?

As president… George Washington pulled in a salary of $25K a year. That’s roughly $1 million in today’s currency… And is reported to have spent seven percent of his income on alcohol.

In an average NFL football game there is only about 12 minutes of actual play time.

The Mayflower landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620… because they had run out of beer… Water didn’t stay drinkable on long sea voyages whereas beer would due to the alcohol…

Only female mosquitoes will bite you…

Iron Eyes Cody, the crying Indian in the famous anti-pollution TV commercial… was actually an Italian-American named Oscar DeCorti.

Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas… used to work for Kentucky Fried Chicken…

By law… French workers get at least 30 paid vacation days each year.

The first American cheerleaders were a bunch of guys at Princeton in the 1880’s.

Russian Mysticism…

“Depressed and disoriented… Russians have abandoned reason for magical thinking…” says writer Vladimir Ruvinsky… Over the past decade… as the economy stagnated… political protest was suppressed… more and more Russians now think aliens have visited Earth… 80% of Russians identify as Orthodox Christians… but only 40% say that they believe in God… and less than 7% regularly go to church… Two-thirds of Russian women say they turn to magicians… fortune-tellers… and psychics for emotional help… Pres. Putin encourages these superstitions… because it “squeezes out critical thinking…” A gullible populace is easy to rule…

Learn_zFunny how every once in a while we start reflecting on life… Has it ever made sense?.. will it ever make sense?.. we wonder why we spend so much time doing things we “have” to do… and so little time doing the things we really “want” to do… we spend so much time with people who add nothing to our lives… and so little time with people we love… We acquire too much that is temporary… and too little that has lasting value… We face new challenges with old ideas… we open and close our hearts at the wrong times… often letting in sorrow and excluding joy… we figure out the answers… long after it’s too late to solve the problems… and yet we rise each morning… ready to fill another day with our hopes and dreams and aspirations… determined to make it all different… do it better… do it right this time… Our dreams are filled with hopes for a new and better tomorrow… Langston Hughes said “Hold fast to your dreams, for if dreams die, life is but a broken winged bird that cannot fly”…so we must all hold fast to our dreams… so that even when our wings are broken… our spirit is not…

In a Rut?…

It occurs to me that sometimes I get into a rut… like the hamster running on that little wheel… I’m going all the time… but I wonder if I am getting anywhere… I get up every morning about the same time… eat the same things for breakfast… drive the same roads to where I need to go…  and do the same activities most days… and end up eating pretty much the dinner I always eat, and so on… now there’s nothing wrong with what I am doing, but I wonder if my life is really composed of 365 different days a year… or of one day… repeated 365 times… I can hear you saying, “but I don’t do exactly the same things everyday” and you are right… but I challenge you to look at your life… and figure out how many of those days are spent running on that little wheel… and how much of your year and thus your life… is spent repeating yourself over and over again… My point is this… Life is short… no matter how you measure it… too short for so much boring repetition… so I am offering you a challenge…  Do something different today… start looking for a new way to get to work… a new way to spend your weekends… a new way to fill your leisure time… and most important… a new way to show those people who mean something to you… just how much you love them…

I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life… too many moments I am not proud of… but I have learned that no matter how long you have traveled down a “wrong” road… it is never too late to turn around… and head in the “right” direction… My faith teaches me… that we are all entitled to second chances… just as long as we are willing to admit our mistakes… and make an honest effort not to repeat them… These second chances… are available to all of us… Don’t be afraid to take advantage of the opportunity…

A friend asked whether I thought relationships were harder today… and I agree with those who say they are… We live in a “temporary” short-term culture.. they don’t build and advertise cars to “last a lifetime”… they want you to trade them in every new model year… music is a “hit” today and gone tomorrow… fads and fixes… whether related to books, movies, diets, clothing styles, video games or children’s toys are all designed to attract us to the “latest” new thing… Reality TV dominates our viewing and it is all about making new friends and then dumping them… TV shows like “Survivor” are all about temporary alliances and relationships… Even shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent… they want us to forget last years winner in the effort to find “this years” winner… there was a time when performers like Sinatra, Bennett, Fitzgerald, could have careers that lasted 40 years… name for me the performers of today you expect to be listening to 40 years from now?.. Our news channels are constantly hyping the latest tragedy or threat or chaotic political situation… They fight to find something “new” to tell us about… the latest list of divorces or celebrity overdoses… I wonder who repairs shoes anymore or fixes the broken toaster?… we can hardly get our new cell phone home before it becomes obsolete and needs to be replaced…A relationship is like a garden or farm… it takes patience, nurturing and lots of continuous work… even when the growing season ends… the work to prepare the soil for the next season begins… the best relationships like the best gardens… are a lot of continuous work… Farmers farm the same land for many generations because they know how to tend to the soil and plant the seeds for each new season… they don’t move on to a new farm every time there is a drought or insect infestation… they know what we no longer understand about relationships… that it takes commitment and dedication and work to make anything successful… it takes toughing it out in the bad times… repairing the damage and rebuilding… after all that is why so many find that the next new hook-up….. doesn’t work any better than the one just left…

Last week… a young boy I met in the supermarket… asked me a simple question… He asked:… “Who are you?” I wanted to tell him… “I have spent my whole life trying to figure that out…” It was a simple question…. But finding out who you are is not simple… It takes a lot of hard work and courage to get to know who you are… and even more to share it with someone else… We tend to define ourselves by what we do… or where we live… or by our last name or racial or religious associations… But do those things really answer the question?… All of us are so much more than those things… They are not who we are after the masks and emblems we wear all day for others to see… are put away for the night… They are not what we feel… what we believe… how we love… what warms our hearts… what brings a smile to our faces or a tear to our eyes… what stirrings are laced into the steady beating of our hearts… Even the carefully released little truths about ourselves that we share with those we love… are so much less than who we are complete… I wonder:… Maybe the only truthful answer I could have given that young boy was… “I don’t know… yet…”

Sometimes… I find myself in some unexpected place… facing some unexpected stranger… wrestling with some unexpected thought… confronting some unexpected challenge… and sometimes in that unexpected place… I learn something unexpected… about myself…

I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for mankind… if we spent less time trying to prove that we can outwit nature and improve on what God has created… and as stewards of this planet… spent more time enjoying its beauty and wonder… while protecting His wonderful creations for our children and grandchildren…

The only thing about your past… that will ever matter… is that you have held yourself accountable for your mistakes… and that you are better than you once were… You must have the confidence to look back at your past… not with shame or humiliation… but acknowledging yourself as an “imperfect” human being… ultimately one who is trying to be their best… No one can ask more of any of us…

A friend complained to me yesterday… that God never answers his prayers… I told him that there are only three answers to prayer… “Yes… No… or Be patient…” I also told him… Sometimes… God doesn’t change your situation… because He is waiting for you… to change your heart…

Love is an irrational emotion… it is beyond explanation… or understanding… It inflames the heart and dulls the brain… It is both dangerous and thrilling… exciting and frightening… Yet it can brighten the dark places in our lives… and fill the emptiness we all run from… It is the one thing in life… we all live for… and cannot live without… I guess the Beatles were right…
Yesterday is gone… Last week is gone… all the past years are gone… It’s time to put whatever mistakes, doubts, pain and disappointments that troubled us then… aside… This new week… brings us a new start… a new opportunity to write the story of our lives… on a new page… To write better things… new successes… happy moments… Make it special… write a new, more beautiful story on this new page… Have a Blessed life… !!
Most often… A break up is like a broken mirror that’s been dropped… It’s better to leave it broken… than hurt yourself trying to pick up the pieces !!!
Dumbing yourself down… to make someone else more comfortable… is a giant mistake… intelligence and competence are not negatives… A strong… confident… self-sufficient person… is far more attractive… than one who is waiting for someone else to come along… and validate them… Don’t change… if they can’t handle that… Tough “#$%&”…

The clerk explained that the device was out for repairs, but said she would figure the infant’s weight by weighing the woman and baby together on the adult scale, then weighing the mother alone and subtracting the second amount from the first. “It won’t work,” countered the woman…….”I’m not the mother, I’m the grandmother.”

According to Gene Dumont, a wildlife biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, a man once called to request that the deer- crossing signs on a road near his home be removed because a number of deer had been hit there. “He wanted the deer-crossing signs taken down,” Dumont explained, “because he didn’t want the deer to cross there anymore.”
